First, let me say, I have read the whole six book series so this review is not limited to Book 1 "Cloud Warrior". Second, I loved it and I was so engrossed in the story I read all whole series one book right after the other just to see how it was going to end. For me,it's just that simple. The premise is not original. How may sci-fi books develop stories around the world getting destroyed by a massive nuclear war? We have a nuclear war but this story starts 1000 years after that war. I just found the storyline very creative. I'm not going to go into a long dissertation of the story, just read the first book. There's a lot of intrigue, adventure, humor and just plain insights into human nature that haven't changed after 1000 years. I think the author is a genius. It's an excellent book and an excellent enjoyable series.

Good read. Very imaginative.
It was hard for me to get started on this but after it was pretty good reading. Will watch for more.
the whole series is good. I plan on rereading it again as I've not read it since high school. So imaginative.
Interesting premise, solid and creative characters, and good action kept me wanting to get back to the book after putting it down.
Cloud Warrior is s good beginning to the six book series. The post apocalyptic setting is well done and the cultural references to the late 20th Century are interesting. I was especially intrigued by the references to places in Texas because that's where I live. The whole series I'd a good one for fans of this genre.
I like the way the book is character driven. It is science fiction but not very technical. It centers around three young people and their part in the coming Talisman Prophesy. Two are from an earth based culture and the other a science based one.
The story is what happens when the science culture tries to destroy the earth culture.
This series came out 20 or more years ago. I loved it but could only find the first two volumes in the US. The last four I found on a trip to London. IMO, Tilley is the godfather of the alt-hist movement. His writing, characters, dialogue, POV etc are as good as Stirling or Birmingham at their best. He is a great story teller.

The catch is that it's a post-apocalyptic story in which the end came in the 80's. As an old timer, I was there, in the 80's that is, and Tilley is masterful at catching that milieu while simultaneously telling a great story. Some of his classic references may slide by younger readers. Still, they should give him a fair read. It is really good stuff.

Read this and you won't stop until you finish. Guaranteed.
