Scout Honor Dori Ann Dupré 9781941541951 Books

Dori Ann Dupre’s young adult debut novel, SCOUT’S HONOR, is hauntingly troubling, yet beautifully written.

Children are vulnerable, emotional sponges; and everything they hear, feel, and experience becomes part and parcel of the narrative of their lives. Sadly, at the impressionable age of fourteen, Scout Webb encounters an experience that will steal her innocence and set her on a path of emotional turmoil and poor choices.

With astonishing skill for a first-time author, Dori Ann Dupre’ traces Scout’s circuitous journey from self-loathing adolescence to mature self-acceptance. With a host of well-written subordinate characters (some we love to love and others we love to loathe), Ms. Dupre’ has created a can’t-put-down, must-read novel.

Scout Honor Dori Ann Dupré 9781941541951 Books Reviews

An interesting journey through the life of the main character, Scout. From a young girl, with her first love, to a young woman, learning more of her life's lessons, to an adult, who has finally succeeded in learning more about life and how to move forward. One of those books where you simply want to know what happens next in the main character's life - one that makes you care. Well done for a first - and looking forward to the next.
Excellent read, especially for this author's first novel! I actually know the author and her family and was so excited to read her very first book! Way to go, Dori Ann! I am looking forward to reading your next novel!
This book about a young woman's experiences growing up and learning to honor and love herself was an incredible story and so well written. I was drawn in from the beginning of the book and really felt like I was experiencing the feelings, emotions, and experiences of the main character, Scout. The author does a wonderful job narrating the story through the eyes of several characters and making the experiences and thoughts of each of those characters work so well to bring the whole story together. I laughed, was sad, was angry, and experienced "uh-huh" moments while reading this book. Before I got a quarter of the way through, I was already in such suspense wondering how it would end. I so hope that there are others to follow from this first-time author!
There were several aspects of this book that I enjoyed as a reader - the humor sprinkled throughout, the setting, the details relating to the time periods covered, and the arc of the story as it encompassed a few distinct periods of Scout's life, for example - but what really impressed me (as a writer) was the way the author chose to tell the story. Using first-person point of view with multiple narrators isn't easy and doesn't always work, but in this case, it was one of the things that kept me turning the pages. Throughout, it was clear who the main character always was, but that didn't take away from the importance or depth of the other point-of-view characters. Everyone had a voice, and there were no apologies or judgments implied for any of them. Instead, by offering up so many viewpoints to the reader while keeping the main character (Scout) mostly in the dark, the author effectively presented the gradual and subtle tragedy that can happen when we base our self-worth on our own interpretations of the actions of those we've loved.
When I can finish a book in two days it is only because I can't put it down. TRUST ME! With five kids, five companies and five pets I rarely get to read a book.....and usually end up putting it aside when life calls. I will tell you "Scout's Honor" had me engrossed from page one. I couldn't put it down. I laughed. I sighed. I was exasperated at the lead character Scout. I cried like a teenage girl who felt her first heartbreak. All I can really say is this author has nailed it. Nailed the adolescent turmoil of crushes. The self loathing that comes from adolescent mistakes. My younger self was cheering Scout on while my 41 year old self scolded her decisions. All I can say is there better be a book about Charlie Porter because he is the type of guy that all of us want our daughter's to marry. Dori PLEASE write Charlie's Story!!!!!!??
Scout's Honor was a fantastic debut. I loved the shifting perspectives throughout the book, because it really emphasized the idea that there are multiple sides to every story. Nothing is black and white. There were places you thought the writing would take you, but then it would switch to a different person's perspective and boom, your mind immediately changes. - Hard to describe because I don't want to put any spoilers!

All of the characters were well fleshed out, even the side people who I didn't think would impact the story quite as much as they did. It kind of led to that idea of "everything happens for a reason." I admit I was a little sad about some of the stuff at the end, but then the epilogue restored my faith about Scout's journey.

Scout's Honor reminded of the Fitzgerald quote "there are many different loves in this world, but never the same love twice." It's such a true sentiment and that came out in Dori's writing. Different people left different impacts on Scout's life and whether they were good or bad, they led her to the place she was supposed to end up. Scout herself was such a true, raw, real protagonist. Really enjoyed this one!
Dori Ann Dupre's debut novel SCOUT'S HONOR perfectly captures the zero to 60 mph joy of first love and the spiral down depression of heartbreak. By letting the reader experience multiple points of view, we can see why certain characters acted the way they did and how they are perceived by Scout, our main character who often gets it wrong. Dupre never protects her characters--she lets them make mistakes and hopefully learn from them. Why do some people fall in love with people they can't have? Why do some people hurt others without bearing any responsibility? Where does forgiveness come from? This novel gave me so much to chew on. I finished it in two days while I was in vacationing in New York. I couldn't do anything else except read this book and I was very sad when I arrived at the last page. Can't wait to read GOOD BUDDY--Dori Ann Dupre's next book!
